McGinty & White Sing Selections from the McGinty & White Songbook
(A new album from downtown scenester Joe McGinty and tippling gadabout Ward White)
The duo that launched a thousand Tiger Beat pictorials is coming to your town in support of their new collaborative album, a first for both the performers. Stemming from an idea proffered over dinner, the duo set out to make use of unfinished material that lay outside their traditional stylistic ranges; for keyboardist McGinty, it meant exploring straightforward ballads and bubblegum inspired pop tunes—for White, a stepping away from familiar singer-songwriter territory to something more atmospheric.
Adhering to a DIY aesthetic, the album was recorded entirely in McGinty's project studio, making use of his extensive collection of vintage keyboards and exotic synthesizers. White contributed the guitars and takes the vocal lead, creating block harmonies and layered choral effects. McGinty augments his keyboard duties with three lead vocals. As the project blossomed, the two enlisted talented friends to help round out the songs with bass, percussion, strings and brass, resulting in a lush sonic palette.
The album closes with a single cover tune, Wichita Lineman, a unique tribute to M&W favorite, Jimmy Webb.
The unenviable task of sorting out the whole mess for mixing was adeptly handled by producer/engineer Ken Rich (Joseph Arthur, Ani DiFranco, The Gutter Twins) at his Brooklyn studio, Grand Street Recording.
